R.E.D.

No, that’s not an acronym; I’m just talking about red.  You know, the color.  What’s with it?  It seems as though it can date itself easily.  Really easily.

It’s a color that associates itself with time eras  - like the 1830s, 1900s, 1960s, 1970s (mixed with pink and yellow… gross), and remember the turn of the new Millennium when everything was Old World?   Yeah, it was just that… old.  world.  Sorry… I don’t mean to be so bleak, but it is ugly Monday after all…

Red is coming back in a fun, new and modern way.  Check out the use of colors like vermilion, carmine, cherry, and geranium in the following rooms.  These aren’t exactly your typical red.

I love the use of high lacquered red on these chairs – it really makes the, otherwise white, room pop.  Image via CoCoCozy

Who knew people where still painting their dining rooms red?  Obviously they are over at Metropolitan Home.  I just love the monotone of the red walls, pencil molding details, and window treatments.  The natural wood elements and white linen on the chairs offset the otherwise harsh feel that red can have.

Simple, clean, and definitely chic.  All with a cherry punch!!

Finally, check out this awesome red closet featured in House Beautiful.  Who knew this would work?  I kinda want to paint my closet red now… oh Lord, one more DIY to add to the list…

TGIF! How a Designer Does the Weekend.

“There aren’t enough fridays in the week.” Man, I’m glad today is Friday – so excited to get my weekend on!

A really good friend, Patrick, is in town this weekend from Richmond, Virginia!  So excited to hang out, go vintage shopping, antiquing, and see what else Chicago has to offer – you know, besides the Sears Tower, Mag Mile, and Oprah.  I live for finding new vintage home stores are other shops.  There’s sweet little spot in Andersonville (just north of Chicago’s Loop around the 5200 block of N Clark) that has home store after vintage home store.  Here are some of my favorites:

Scout Chicago

Scout has a wonderful mix of vintage furniture and accessories, hand made lighting, and local artistry all with that awesome mid-century flair.  They have a small shop, so their inventory is always moving – hardly ever see the same piece twice!

Brimfield

Brimfield is just next door to Scout.  It may not be everyone’s style, but it is definitely interesting and beautiful enough to check out.  Their items have a vintage lumber jack “mountain in the woods” kinda flair (in the best of ways of course) and the space smells of Christmas trees (via a burning candle).  Tufting, Tartan plaids, and all kinds of teak adorn this shop.  They even reupholster vintage furniture finds with heavy weight wool blankets from the arm? Or something like that… either way they are b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l!

The Find

In West Town (West of the Loop, go figure!) you’ll find another awesome little spot with loads of designer shops, showrooms, vintage, and high end salvage  stores (yes, ladies, that is possible).  My favorite is definitely The Find.  What is it with me on this vintage kick today?  Idk, but The Find has vintage art work (you know, from the 18th and 19th century), furniture, but pops it with a few modern pieces.  I once saw a Chanel lamp there… SA-WEET!  If you don’t visit this place, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Jayson Home

Ok, so my last recommendation is going to be Jayson Home & Garden.  This store is a little more mainstream and outfitted like a showroom – they have new furniture pieces mixed with antique and salvaged accessories and decorative objects.  Probably the coolest thing about this place is that they have an in-house florist, where you can stock up on succulents for your prized terrarium.  Their style is very Bohemian Rustic with a pinch of Modernism.  I would compare this place to what Restoration Hardware strives to be.  They are much more unique and don’t sell fake antlers.  Really? if you’re going to by antlers, how about at least by the real thing? no? any takers? yes.. that’s what I thought.

With all of that said, quit reading my blog and go enjoy the weekend!  And, for God’s sake, if you find something awesome, let a brotha know?!?

I’ll sleep when I’m dead!

It’s be a really long time … so, hey guys!

We’ve been so busy that I’ve had zero time to check in with everyone.

Geez!  Get your head outta the gutter!

We’re working with the CAI Design Showroom at the Merchandise Mart by marketing the Hypnos Mattress line to our clients.  A little background:

These are the mattresses of the Queen and Royal Family of England (or the UK? I don’t know what it’s really called…).  If you ever visit one of their residences, they ask you what your firmness preference is and you get to sleep on your very own mattress that is then stored until your next visit… that is unless your firmness preferences change.

It was so comfortable and so luxurious – if you’re in the market, we definitely think you should test one out today!

Cheerio, old chaps!

A Designer’s Dilemma – Donna DIYed?

For those of you who know Donna, she is what I like to affectionately call an outsourcer.  Donna is amazing in SO many ways – Donna Designs, Donna Delivers, Donna Delegates; however, Donna does not DIY.  First thing Monday morning, Donna said: “you are NOT going to believe what I did over the weekend.”  She then proceeds to show me pictures of the art wall that she, YES SHE, installed herself.   I was as shocked as you are…

The art wall is located in her study / home office on the first floor of her town house (see above – I’ve highlighted it’s location).   It is one of those “what do I do with this triangle-shaped wall” situations under the stairs.  Fill it with art from leg to leg to hypotenuse – if you have a right triangle!

You can see that she started by laying the wall out on the floor to get the exact placement of the frames – which are mainly these awesome pewter and berlap frames from from West Elm.

Since I am an avid DIYer, I’d like to pass along my words of wisdom to you…  It might be a good idea to start with the larger pieces of art then work around those – it would be much harder to fit in the larger pieces if you start with the smaller pieces first.   Ya live and ya learn.

The final, well, almost final product:

All of the stockings frames where hung by the chimney stairs with care.  Now just to fill them with pictures!

Um… btw… did I fail to mention that Donna has started painting?!?!  ..and by Donna, I mean, she has hired painters.  I haven’t seen it yet but I can’t describe to you how excited I am!  Donna hates blue, but I totally convinced her to paint her office navy – isn’t it, in the words of Martyn Lawrence Bullard, delicious?  I love how it pops off all of the white molding.

More pictures to come soon….

Super Bowl Interiors

Save The Date: Super Bowl XLVI Sunday, February 5, 2012

It’s that time of year again… the football season is coming to a close with the big event: the Super Bowl. Are you ready for the big game? Super Bowl Sunday is way more than just any other game day… it involves training, teamwork, a hearty meal and a game plan!

Check out these game day hot spots and get your party ready for a big win with these party tips!

As Seen on http://www.asiainterior.net/2011/how-to-prepare-your-home-for-a-super-bowl-party/

Heads Up! Make sure you have plenty of seating for game time. When receiving R.S.V.P’s always give or take 10 guests to that original number because you never know who will show up last minute. Also, plan ahead to bring in extra seats from other rooms to assure that everyone will find the perfect spot to watch history in the making!

Talk about a cozy man’s den! The wood repeated throughout this space brings out an incredible rhythm in the design. It’s best to consider multifunctional furniture to maximize seating and space in the perfect viewing room. This built in sofa is large enough to seat the most dedicated fans while leaving the elevated wood frame available for additional seating or a buffet layout.

Has your family collected an absurd amount of team paraphernalia? Turn the clutter into decor and transform your space into the #1 Fan residence!

Bring the Stadium to You!

So you didn’t get tickets to the Super Bowl? No worries, bring the stadium to you! Let your guests sit in their own personal box seating; and if the game isn’t enough for them bring out other entertainment such as pool tables with easy access to the big screens. For those of you true fans: “Go Big! Or Go Home!”, for real, some fans have gone as far as bringing the jumbo-tron home!

It’s All About the Screen! Who said you needed just one screen to watch the big game? Whether your tastes are more traditional or contemporary there is a perfect screening wall for everyone! From flush mounted to entertainment cabinets game day awaits you in the screens!

May the best team win!

Clean, Sleek, & Timeless

These three words perfectly describe the design style of NYC’s Shawn Henderson.  I recently came across his firm and work during my daily parooz of Gilt Group where he was featured in their Designer’s Boutique flash sale.

His work seems to have a very neutral and calming effect.  I love the color and tonal variations through out his neutral pallet as well as his mix of organic forms and materials in conjunction with straight and clean lines.

The views from this living room are stunning! I love how his design is equally as beautiful, yet he has not overpowered the space and allowed the exterior and interior to work in harmony.

The organic forms in this office are insane! Check out the spider-like light fixture, the Asian inspired artwork, and the neutral wood tones all paired with gray.  The unconventional use of color in incredible!

Does anyone else feel like they are looking at the interior of a cloud? Heaven.
This a great clean space with a hint of Mid Century Modern.  That Lindsey Adelman chandelier is to die for!
An art wall is probably the most difficult design feature for me to conceive.  There are so many elements that go into its design – placement, frames, art, mattes, etc.  It’s amazing how these shelves make this wall crazy interesting – adding a few chunky frames = genius!
The mix of a modern | clean four poster bed makes this bedroom so elegant.
If all of this isn’t enough, Shawn also has a furniture line!  How awesome is this terrycloth upholstered chair – love the Mid Century vibe w/o it being over the top Mid Century.
This shelving system is perfection.  Clean lines, earthy feel, industrial, modern chic?  How is that possible for one piece?  Amazin’
If you have an extra minute, it is worth your while to jump over to Gilt Group to see Shawn’s picks!
